AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'Readers will regret to learn that Mr. Hilary Lofting died in Sydney on 3rd May, at the comparatively early age of 57. Best known to Australian Journal readers as a collaborator with Margaret Fane in many unusual and gracefully written short stories, Hilary Lofting was regarded in literary circles as one of Australia's foremost critics and men of letters. A brother of Hugh Lofting, famous for the 'Dr. Doolittle' books, he was born in London, and came to Australia about twenty-five years ago. Although an engineer by profession, Mr Lofting's real interests were literary. He contributed to many Australian publications, and gave frequent broadcast addresses on literary topics. Australian literature is poorer for his passing.'
