Notes

  • Accompanying note : 'The annexed Epitaph was written on the melancholy fate of an amiable and accomplished young man, (mutato nomine); and we fear, the facts which it records, afford by no means a solitary instance of the poverty, and neglect, which virtue and talents have been destined in later times, to experience from those, to whom they have naturally, but vainly looked for patronage, and support.'
  • This work appeared in the Gleaner in 1827 without the author's name indicated, however it appears to have been written by Laurence Hynes Halloran (q.v.). Presumably fictional, the 'epitaph' dwells on the misfortunes of a poet who was unable to find a patron. The work's subject, 'Horace Laurelles', appears in part to be an anagram of Halloran's names.
