Notes

  • Author's note: 'On the rupture with "America" '.
  • This work appeared in the Gleaner in 1827 under the caption : 'Extracts from the "New AEra", a Poem, published early in 1812, but supressed'. Whilst not explicitly stated, the poem appears to have been written by Laurence Hynes Halloran, editor and proprietor of the Gleaner. Further evidence that the work was written by Halloran appears in an author's/publisher's note referring to 'The New Era' [sic] which appeared in the volume No Popery!
