Notes

  • Author's note: 'Written in 1810 at the Cape of Good Hope' (appears only with the Gleaner version).
  • This work appeared in the Gleaner in 1827 without the author's name indicated, however the accompanying note stating that the poem was written at the Cape of Good Hope in 1810, suggests that it was written Laurence Hynes Halloran, editor and proprietor of the Gleaner, who held the position of Chaplain of Brigade at the Cape Colony in the period 1807-1811.

  • This work might initially have been published in Halloran's volume titled Proceedings...at the Cape of Good Hope...(1811). It also appeared in the Tickler Magazine on 1 March, 1820 (p.48), where the author's name was given as 'A-Y-T-M'.
