Notes

  • Epigraph: 'He best can paint them, that has felt them most.'
  • This poem appeared in the Gleaner in 1827 with the author's name not indicated. It subsequently appeared in the Colonial Times in 1831, with the accompanying note : 'Written by the late Dr. Halloran, of Sydney, just previous to leaving England - October 1818'.

This poem appears to have been first published in English newspapers in ca. 1816. It was also evidently published in the New Times on 6 October, 1818, where it was attributed to Halloran - which then sparked an exchange between Halloran and the editor of the Literary Journal, who had suggested that Halloran might not have been the author. In his response, published in the Literary Journal on 17 October, 1818, Halloran strongly refuted this suggestion, and emphatically stated that the work was his.
