Notes

  • Author's note: Mr Editor, The enclosed lines are at your service, and were written in opposition to the oft repeated insinuations of a contemporary of yours, 'that the native youth of the colony favored his doctrines.' They embody my opinions, with those of my countrymen with whom I am personally acquainted, who are proud of the name of Britain, and who honor their King in the person of his Representative.
  • At foot of poem: Sydney, June 16, 1829
  • Epigraph: 'Discite justitiam moniti, et non temnere divos' VIRG
  • 'Highly critical of the editor of the Australian. Concludes with the common idea that Australia will take over Britain's role when the latter crumbles - if there aren't too many Australians like this editor.' - Webby
