Notes

  • A quote from Montrose Standard, October 27, 1848 precedes the poem: 'During these many years Montrose has been singularly unfortunate in her poets. Various reasons have been assigned for the extraordinary paucity of poetical genius in a town otherwise distinguished for the number of talented men which it has produced'.
