Notes

  • Author's note: Since this poem was printed I have been sent a splendid quotation from an ancient Greek writer:- 'The whole earth is the tomb of heroic men, and their story is not only graven in stone over their clay, but abides everywhere, without visible symbol, woven into the stuff of other men's lives.' My little poem puts the same thought in a weaker way centuries after.
