AbstractHistoryArchive Description

'The Traveston Crossing dam proposal was a political stunt, delivered by a premier who intended to retire. Despite CSIRO evidence of decreasing rainfall in South East Queensland, his desperation to appear decisive and capable of managing the region's water crisis won out. But more is at risk than mere party politics.' (from Foreword by Jerry Coleby-Williams)

Notes

  • Contents indexed selectively. Includes contribution by Dr Eve Fesl, Beverly Hand, Smiley Burns, and Auntie Joyce Smith
  • Dedication: Dedicated to the friends of Mary - along her edges, across her country, and around the globe; may their efforts succeed in protecting her forever.
  • Includes further information websites, map and reading lists.
  • Epigraph: Inland waterways are sacred to women in Aboriginal cultures; coastal estuaries and beaches are sacred to men. Rivers are the sacred flow between the feminine and masculine, arteries from the heartland to the sea, sustaining life at every bend of their journey to the coast. Mountain freshwater winds through the land, nourishing a myriad species including human communities, before entering saltwater to renew life in the sea. The Mary River is such a river, one of the last remaining rivers still flowing relatively freely in south-east Queensland. Here its story is told, for all to know its incredible value to Australia and to the planet. Here is a love letter from the Mary River.
