Inspired in part by the biblical tale of Salome, and commissioned by Malthouse Theatre and Sydney Opera House, Vamp has been described by its performer and co-creator Meow Meow as the 'dual empowerment and disempowerment of the body and its sensual or ridiculous dance.' The show is essentially the celebration of the sexually charged woman - movie stars like Theda Bara, Marlene Dietrich, and Louise Brooks, unconventional and fascinating women like Sarah Bernhardt, Montes, Mata Hari and Maria Callas, and of course the Judaean princess Salome, who used her beauty to wreak a horrible revenge on John the Baptist, the man who refused to respond to her desire.
