  • Epigraph: Mr Gore, addressing his wife, said, 'Mary, there is no hope for us now; we shall go to heaven together.' Mrs Gore said, 'We can die but once - Jesus died for us - God keep us - Atlas, of to day.
  • AustLit note: The Sovereign was wrecked off Moreton Island on 11 March 1847. Of the 54 people on board, 10 survived. Mr and Mrs Gore, their two children and a servant were among nine cabin passengers, all of whom died.
