Robert Martin Vickers is a detective with the Criminal Investigation bureau in Melbourne. "A casual observer would have estimated his age at about thirty and wouldn't have been far wrong. Vickers was not a big man, physically, but well-knit, and carried no superfluous flesh." Raised by his mother after the death of his father Vickers held a series of jobs until World War II. After serving for six years he returned a Lieutenant. "Everything seemed changed,however,...and obeying a sudden whim, Vickers joined the detective force." (from 'The Man For the Job' p.113-114)
