Notes

  • This poem appears in a column headed 'Poems by Charles Harpur'. However, all of Harpur's poems in the Maitland Mercury are numbered with Roman numerals and this poem is not. Also, as far as is known, Harpur had no connection with Port Stephens which is given as the composition place for this poem.
  • Although this poem appears in the Maitland Mercury under the author attribution 'H.', it is in fact an extract from Eliza S. Craven Green's 'The Bard's Farewell'. Craven Green's poem was reproduced in full in the Freeman's Journal (under the title 'A Farewell') on 4 April 1868. The original publication source of the full poem is not yet known.
