Notes

  • The author provides a prefatory long note explaining her learning as a child in Uruguay that the indigenous people 'who inhabited the area now occupied by Uruguay have disappeared.' She notes that other indigenous peoples in South and Central America have survived and writes: 'This poem is about the need to avoid the mistakes of other nations, while there is still time' (p. 98).
