AbstractHistoryArchive Description

Colin Rankin is one of the few non-autistic people left on the planet. In his dull existence, he only looks forward to the visits of his daughter Rebecca, a high-functioning person with Aspergers, and his similar grandson Shawn. His disappointment at their visit's cancellation runs deeper: he is uncomfortable around most members of the autistic spectrum, and longs for society as it used to run. Eventually, he has the revelation that the world has evolved and left him behind.

Affiliation Notes

  • Writing Disability in Australia:

    Type of disability Autism.
Type of character Primary and secondary.
Point of view Third person (not the disabled character).

Note: This work uses disability as a metaphorical note or literary device. An 'autism epidemic', followed by neurotypicals leaving the planet for space colonies, leaves the main character one of the few neurotypicals left.
