  • This poem is introduced with a quotation from the Sydney Morning Herald, Thursday, 25 June 1846, relating to a boating party that included Mr Edye Manning, his family and the Colonial Secretary.
  • 'On Edye Manning's new steam ship.' - Webby
  • The Phoenix was a ship built by Mr Edye Manning 'around the engines of the old Sophia Jane, the first steamer imported from England'. Manning then used the Phoenix to start 'trade with south coast ports and the Clarence River'.
