Notes

  • One of a number of letters from notable literary figures calling for a greater recognition of Australian literature and writers which appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald at this time. Here Brereton refers to a lecture by poet and literary figure Hugh McCrae, which he hoped would promote a greater public interest in Australian literature. Brereton also refers to the issue of tariffs on books, which was also of concern to writers and readers at this time.
