Notes

  • Translator's note: In Spanish, the word 'hoja' refers to both the leaf on a tree and the page in a book. Its double meaning in this poem, in which the pages of books burn in Pinochet's autumn, cannot be fully rendered in English. I have elected, therefore, to choose 'leaf' over 'page' in order to maintain the poem's seasonal allusions.
