AbstractHistoryArchive Description

A version of the traditional ballad 'The Hunting of the Cheviot', about the conflict between Percy of Northumberland (an Englishman) and Douglas of Scotland.

Notes

  • Includes an extensive editor's note on 'the history of this old ballad' and its 'inferior' paraphrases. The editor concludes: 'we thought that we should be doing a service to a poem ... by executing a new version... The modern version is of the Brady and Tate school - if ours should be thought to bear a strong resemblance to the Sternhold and Hopkins, we shall still think it an improvement.'
