AbstractHistoryArchive Description

A satirical view of a Meeting called to support an independent press in the Swan River Colony (Western Australia). The author (possibly the editor of the Perth Gazette, Charles Macfaull) describes the events of the meeting as a shambles '... and the business of the night ended in a dance.' William Nairne Clark, publisher and editor of the Swan River Guardian and Macfaull's opposition, is mentioned prominently. Also mentioned are William Nairn (1767-1853) and a Captain Tompkins. See also 'Notice', Perth Gazette 24 March 1838. (Link at right.)
