Notes

  • Author's note: 'The short-lived Castle Hill Rebellion took place in 1804. At Vinegar Hill (now called Rouse Hill) the convicts were confronted by a band of soliders under Major Johnston. This officer, by the treacherous mis-use of the white flag of truce, captured the convicts' leaders, Johnson and Cunningham. In the subsequent rout about a dozen convicts were killed and many were afterwards hanged for taking part in the rebellion.'
