William Mortimer, the captain of the Stormy Petrel, takes his family (including his daughter Jessie and sons William and Jackie) on a voyage to Australia. They visit Sydney and Melbourne, and along the way have many adventures, including braving a storm and an iceberg, rescuing a castaway, and uncovering a crime.
