The story of Phillip Chancellor, a 13-year-old boy born and bred in North Queensland, who goes to sea to embark on a navy cadetship. He has many adventures along the way, beginning with the rescue of a Pacific Island from a crocodile and later from his abusive plantation owner, and the book ends with Phillip arriving in England, and being placed aboard the naval ship 'Britannia'.
