Notes

  • E. Morris Miller's Australian Literature from its Beginnings to 1935 (1940): 455 comments: 'Tasmanian incidents are more prominent in Tales of the Old Regime, 1897; this includes gruesome stories of the coal-pits and 'A Day with Governor Arthur'. Perhaps the most interesting character is William Shovey, 'the 'Henry Porcher' Bolter.' Having escaped, he became a recluse and a collector of old books in his house at Richmond, Melbourne. He had no shelving and his books were scattered everywhere in the house, on the beds, tables, chairs, window-recesses and other places.'

This is a tale of ten convicts condemned to death in Sydney and their appeal to 'The Ring' in an attempt to escape the sentence. It is a good tale which maintains the suspense with a masterly hand. Set in the convict period it cleverly depicts the convict way of thinking and the attitude of the warders and the authorities. Also appearing are the women prisoners who are effectively used in the story. (Back cover).
