  • Epigraph: The Mount Jackson prospectors are being driven back to Southern Cross owing to the absence of water in that very promising gold district. The Government have done nothing, and are doing nothing, and mining will be at a standstill until the rains come. Even the Bullfinch water scheme is a sorry failure, and a famine is being experienced there. Only at night can any water be obtained at all, owing to the low pressure in the pipe.
