Notes

  • Editor's note: The troop-ship Birkenhead, taking troops to Africa, struck on a rock on a clear night. The boats could only hold the women and children. The troops drawn up in line on her deck, presented arms, and the band played the Anthem, as the vessel sank with colours flying. All were lost.
