  • Editor's note: The Waterwitch can be seen as a localised version of the British whalers song The Coast of Peru ... this version [is dated] to the colonial sperm whaling era prior to 1837. The Waterwitch was a sailing barque of 236 tons, built in 1820 and. for a time, in the fleet of Alexander McGregor. She last hunted for whales in 1892 and was wrecked in 1917. (p.240)
