Notes

  • This poem refers to Wagon Hill (Platland), near Ladysmith, in South Africa. During the Siege of Ladysmith (1899-1900), the hill was occupied by British forces, who held it against Boer attacks until reinforcements arrived in February 1900. For some reason the poem initially appeared in the Brisbane Courier and the Queenslander under the title 'Pagon Hill', with the name 'Pagon Hill' being repeated within the poem itself. Whether this was due to a typographical error or to Evans's misunderstanding of the name remains to be established.
