The Cooktown Herald was established by W. H. L. Bailey, and began publication on 20 March 1875. In April 1878, the paper was sold to Reginald Spencer-Browne and Charles John James and was operated by them until publication was suspended in March 1879. Bailey purchased the paper again and resumed publication within ten days, operating it until it finally ceased on 9 December 1884.
