AbstractHistoryArchive Description

Hergenhan examines the corruption of Rufus Dawes in terms of the narrative's departure from the melodrama of the gentleman hero. Transportation and flogging all lead to Dawes' loss of identity, and the subsequent bitterness and despair brings on a spiritual death. Dawes' fight against this spiritual death proceeds while Reverend North is destroyed by self-loathing.
