The North Queensland Guardian was launched in May 1937 as the official organ of the Queensland State Committe Communist Party. With the outbreak of WWII in 1939, communist newspapers faced increasing censorship problems, culminating in a ban issued on 27 May 1940. The paper was re-launched in January 1943, and in October was re-located to Brisbane where it continued as The Queensland Guardian.
