  • The title of this sequence was not given at the commencement of the first poem, so has been taken from the cover title of the selected work in which the sequence is contained, Brandah the Blackfellow and Other Poems.
  • Author's note: 'A young friend, of not much above seven, asked me to "tell him a story." I started at random with "Mickie," and told him in some way suited to his child-like intelligence a great part of what I have written here. Later, some friend knowing that I had written poetry on other subjects suggested "you ought to write some lines on the Aborigines." This is the result.'
