Miranda Devine attacks Paul Jennings's opinion (as aired on ABC Radio National in March 2008) that children can learn to read through exposure to literature, for instance by being read to by their parents. Devine sees the 'whole word' teaching method as a manifestation of 'a type of left-wing ideology, which permeates the education industry'.
