Notes

  • Cora Pearl (Emma Elizabeth Crouch 1835?-1886) was born in London but educated in a French convent school. She returned to Paris, engaging in a series of liaisons with notable Frenchmen. The longest of her liaisons was with Prince Napoleon; she also entertained the Prince of Wales. Cora Pearl had literary ambitions and published a story in Ficelles Litteraires. Her last years were spent in increasing poverty. (K. D. Reynolds and J. Gilliland, 'Pearl, Cora (1835?-1886)', Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (Sept 2004).
