A journalist had discovered that a jockey and a bookie were collaborating on fixing a country race. When he refuses the jockey's bribe of a third share of the winnings not to expose the plot, the jockey hits him with a poker, burns the journalist's copy of the story and then tries to trick the police by turning back a clock and smashing it. The journalist's daughter tells the detective that the jockey had been trying to contact the journalist and when the detective discovers the journalist's notes on who won the races that day he realises the jockey was lying.

Beatrice, a beautiful young woman from Melbourne, married Bram after her true love, Adrian (a singer), married Rosalie for her money. Beatrice and Bram move north to a place in the hills where they grow bananas. After she has three children Beatrice begins to think about her lost love who is now a famous singer. One night, at midnight, Beatrice receives a visit from Rosalie who tells her that Adrian had never forgotten Beatrice. The next morning Beatrice discovers that Rosalie had died before midnight on the road to Beatrice's home.
