Vallis speaks of his method for writing poems; he describes his family life, growing up in Gladstone, Central Queensland; publishing his poetry in the Bulletin; gaining a scholarship to study after the war; and his career as a university lecturer. Vallis reads the poems: 'Naval Exercises', 'The Enquiry', 'Songs of the East Coast', 'The Old Fisherman', and 'Michael'.
