Notes

  • Dedication: Dedicated to Miss Bessie Davies in grateful recognition of her many kindnesses to her friend the authoress. Also as a slight token of appreciation of her untiring efforts in the interests of Chritian Socialism. Florence Emily Todd. Prahran, Victoria, Feb. 21, 1896.
  • Epigraph: Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them. - Matt. VII, 12.
  • Author's Preface: This pamphlet professes to be nothing more than a series of short rhyming essays, or an essay in verse divided into sections on social and religious matters.

My object in writing the poems was to show poor people, workers, and earners (women especially) who have little time or inclination for reading, or opportunity for interchange of thought with people who understand or study social questions, &c., that Socialism and Christianity are not only closely akin, but identical; that Jesus Christ himself is the very prince of Socialists, the Founder of Socialism; and that those who oppose Socialism are opposers of or enemies to Christianity - that is Christ's own Christianity - conventional Christianity as observable in, upheld, countenanced and encouraged by most so-called Christian churches being in great part a mere mockery or sham, a snare and a delusion, a stumbling block; while public worship in churches is also a luxury beyond the reach of most of the honest poor and working people.
