Includes two stories with no Australian themes or settings: 'John Bulb, the Barber' and '"Dark Dennis" and his Grandson'. The first story,'Fred Leicester; or, The Southern Cross and Charles Wain' is described as follows: 'Fred, a young Englishman, acquires 'colonial experience', finds a fortune on the diggings, and returns with it to England to marry 'his Helen'.
