  • Editor's note: The book from which this extract is taken was in 1931 awarded the Australian Literature Society's prize for the best Australian novel of the year. It is the story of the struggle for freedom of the heroine - a little red heifer on an outback cattle station. The book has become a favourite with boys and girls, for it is one of the best animals stories written.
