  • Author's note: In his Memorandum placed at the end of the poem, Jeffery states that the poem was written on board the "Vibilia" and that the tornado happened during the night 'between the 18th and 19th days of February, 1835'. Jeffery also provides information about the ship and its owner/commander.
  • Author's note: A sentence in Greek placed at the end of the poem acknowledges the writer's belief in God's protection.
