Banned in Australia

Decision: 3 Oct 1972
NAA Source: C4226; 'The Room' folder. C4129/1; Boxes Q-R.
Censorship notes: One censor noted: '...many scenes are quite impossible to accept as social realism; this means that they are nothing but outright pornography, cashing in on the best-seller market. I recommend prohibition.' Another censor commented: 'I do not think civilisation can exist if all types of pornography are permitted freedom - or license - and I feel a descent into a pornographic maelstrom may well be inevitable unless a stand is taken.' The novel was released on 17.08.1973
