A brief sketch of the life of young Jim from infancy to adulthood. Jim adores his parents and want to be just like his father, who was 'mentioned in despatches' for his bravery in South Africa. When Jim enlists in World War I, he gets his chance to follow in his father's footsteps. Throughout his days, Jim is guided by his strong Christian faith.

Notes

  • Dedication: To my great-niece, Synolda Joan Margaret Munro-Spencer, whom I have never seen without her goose. Some day, perhaps, she will deign to read these few pages about an ordinary boy. That she may become, like many women of the Empire, worthy of the title of this little book, is the hope of her great-uncle.
  • The title is referred to in the text as 'baby talk' for the term 'mentioned in despatches'.
