      • Author's note: Foreword : 'Tanti, with his friends and relations, lived on the Mornington Peninsula before and after the arrival of the white man. Naturally some of them were present at any incident that might be classed today as of historical interest.

From the arrival of Bass at Western Port and the visits of "Investigator" and "Lady Nelson" in Port Phillip, Tanti's fellow tribesmen and close relations have assisted in the activities of the growing body of white settlers, whose efforts made the Peninsula what it is today. The story is simply told that readers, young and old, may get a better idea of how events of the past have influenced the prosperity we enjoy.' Hunter Rogers. Mornington. 1.9.77
