Notes

  • Epigraph: For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. - Mat. 10; 37.
  • Author's note: The exigencies of rhyme often make one commit errors in grammar, but the cramping form of the sonnet makes only a bare statement possible. I usually like to think of Christ as one of the first great Socialists; but, then, such things as the Crusades, the Inquisition and the Slaughter of the Huguenots are not easily forgotten. Perhaps it is that some of His ambiguous teachings are faulty translations.
