'This book is composed of interviews with Aboriginal people of the Northern Territory recorded in 1976-1977. The recordings were commissioned by the Northern Territory Department of Education and were intended to be used as a school text. The Department, however declined to make use of the material, which remained unheard and unread for more then a decade. In 1989 the Institute for Aboriginal Development, Alice Springs suggested that the recordings be published, partly for use as course material for adult education courses, and partly for a wider Australian audience...By 1990 very many of the older speakers in this book had died and most of their stories with them. Therefore we decided to leave the manuscript much as it had been prepared for publication in 1978, as the voice of a generation which has passed, or is now passing away.' (Peter and Jay Read, Preface, pvi)
...The autobiographical accounts are often in the form of interviews; the interviewer is not named.
