  • Supposed publisher's note: 'The author of this book is dead; he was drowned after a hurricane had wrecked his schooner. But, amongst his belongings, this manuscript was found by Mr. S. W. Powell, who edited it, added an explanatory introduction and sent it along to us.'
  • The supposed author of this 'autobiography' was, according to the British Library catalogue, the pseudonymous William John Smith.
