AbstractHistoryArchive Description

Revusical.

Notes

  • It is possible that the title of this revusical is a misprint, and should have read On the Sands. See, for example, the review of Clay's operations titled 'Hustling Harry' (Theatre October 1916, p.45). This possibility is supported by the fact that no other reference to On the Land has been found to date.
  • Several other revusicals with country/farming settings were staged in Australia between 1915 and the late 1920s. These include Paul Stanhope's On the Farm (1915), Nat Phillips' A Sporting Chance (1916); Art Slavin's Fun on a Ranch (1916); Fooling the Farmer (Clay circuit, 1917); and Billy Cass's Fun on the Farm (1926).

It is not clear whether any of the above works are related to a minstrel farce staged by Harry Rickards in 1897 under the title Fun on a Farm (see Melbourne Opera House, beginning 17 July).
