Notes

  • Dedication: 'For my son Matcham.'
  • Author's note: 'The White Man's Garden grew on the island of Daat, near the coast of Borneo, which readers of The Meeting Pool may remember. I am indebted to the Sejarah Melayu, or Malay History, for the first of the little stories; to Khamis, a Kadayan youth of Labuan, Borneo; to old Norsa, who long since left the Singapore Hospital for the bosom of Allah; and to Munshi Muhammed Sa'aid, of Penang Straits Settlements, for most of the others.'
  • Epigraph:

"But it's all wrong," said the Botanist.
"Who was addressing you?" replied the Author.
