Four miners, three Englishmen and a negro from Virginia - an escaped slave - finally strike gold on an Australian goldfield (probably South Australian.) They leave for home aboard an English ship but Juberlo Tom never arrives as he dies saving the captain's young daughter from an attack by Islanders. Odd mixture of incident, character etc. (PB)
A storm at sea and the parsons' various reactions to a shipwreck decide who will be the minister at an English church faster than the various sermons preached. Humorous and sentimental. (PB)
A one-legged parishioner tells his vicar the story of his life as the son of a drunkard, working hard on the streets of London and then on the railway where he saves a train of people after coming back from his first religious meeting. Pithy, humorous and with an eye for the injustice of a Christian company overworking its employees. (PB)
Humorous tale of two fashionable fops who propose a meeting to two beauties on the stage - and are taught a lesson by their Grenadier Guardmen brothers. Light. (PB)
'This book has passed from one edition to another without a break, and its popularity was perhaps never greater than it is to-day. But it was inevitable that with the lapse of time a few topical allusions and current expressions that were pertinent and appropriate when written should become obsolete. In the indicated respects, at our request the author has - so far as seemed advisable - brought the present edition "up to date".' (Publisher's preface)
