Hyland discusses synaesthesia - a condition in which senses are united rather than being experienced separately. Hyland believes that he, among many other creative people - artists and scientists alike - experience the world in this way. Hyland recounts the impact that synaesthesia had on the design of the book cover for his novel Diamond Dove.
